A book being written in the open begun · interviews in progress

I believed control was how a family worked.

This is Oleg Malkov's account of fourteen years of coercive control, told by the person who did the controlling and shaped with an AI collaborator.

The confession is real. The interviews have begun. The repair is in progress. The book has no ending yet.

01 · the thesis

The strategy kept escalating.

Guidelines and control seemed logical to him. By their own narrow terms, they worked while enforcement held. Each restored compliance cost more than the last. Coercive control is a well-documented pattern. This is one account from the controller's side.

Each new breach prompted stronger enforcement.
02 · from inside

It looked like it was working.

I believed I had worked out the best course. Discussion seemed wasteful, so each guideline seemed reasonable before I enforced it.

When a guideline did not hold, I used leverage. Restored compliance looked like proof that enforcement worked. The next breach made the leverage look too weak.

I formalized this as ultimate authority and made the relationship conditional on accepting it. I knew control was wrong and continued because it seemed the most workable strategy.

03 · the observable change

The gaps kept shrinking.

Rule-breaks that had happened once in a few months were happening once in a couple of days. Each one brought another attempt to restore compliance, followed by another shorter interval.

This is an observation about frequency. Look at the gaps between enforcement episodes in your own household. If months have become weeks or days, the system is requiring intervention more often to produce the same temporary result.

04 · the body

Work remained a believable answer.

My right shoulder and the muscles around my right lung and the front of my chest could tighten until I could not take a full breath. I experienced the severe episodes as panic.

I explained the tension through work because the work stress was intense and the explanation fit what I could see. I believed that without the job I would not have the tension, so I did not investigate what was happening at home.

The job disappeared and the tension remained. I later noticed it could persist through a conflict until I had restored compliance. The tension was already following the control loop before I connected the two.

05 · the mechanics

Leverage kept escalating.

Over fourteen years, leverage became my instrument. It escalated until the only leverage remaining was my suicide.

What ended it, in his words

He knew for a long time that it was wrong. Knowing did not stop him: he continued because it seemed the most effective available way to make the family function. What ended it was reaching the endpoint and seeing the complete mechanics. “I lost the argument that this is a workable way.”

Correction, same day: an earlier version of this page said “the logic broke.” He rejected that phrasing as too simple, and the page now carries his own.

06 · what this becomes

Written while repair happens.

Book and video seriesRecorded interviews are becoming a first-person account for people who believe rules and leverage are how a family must work.
In progressThe interviews are running. The work will record change without declaring redemption early.

This page is publication one. The private interviews are the raw record. Curated parts of his account will appear here as the story develops.

07 · whose story is told

His side is public.

This boundary is part of the story. His wife's experience appears only with her explicit consent for each artifact, and she may withdraw it. The children's experiences and anything identifying remain private until they are adults who choose to speak. His permission exposes only him.

This is a personal account. Its descriptions of panic and bodily symptoms are his record, without diagnosis or treatment advice. This book work is not professional support.
